Latest Personal Safety News.

By Robert Agar-Hutton

This page will cover media reports of violence and my comments thereon...  Most recent items will be at the top of the page...

Jan 23 The BBC news website reports:

"Fatal attack' at Belgium creche"

"Five people have been killed in a knife attack at a creche in western Belgium, according to local media."

"Flemish VTM television said three children and two adults have been killed, and other reports say a further 20 people have been injured."

Comment: I think that the personal safety lesson to be learnt from this horror is that violence is (as far as the victim is concerned) a completely random event that can happen anywhere and at any time - you absolutely need to have the skills to maximize YOUR chances of survival.

Jan 22 The BBC news website reports:

"Burglaries and knife robberies up"

"Robberies at knife point have risen by almost a fifth, according to official figures for England and Wales."

Comment: What is needed is complex, it is probably nothing less than a change in the values that we teach the young, a justice system that acts to administer justice and a large dose of common sense to all - and oh yes, a media that doesn't glorify violence on one hand whilst inflaming public fear on the other... Don't hold your breath waiting for any of that to happen any time soon.<SIGH>
