Frequently Asked
Questions

We will update this page often with generic
and anonymous versions of whatever queries we get via email,
telephone or face-to-face conversation with prospects and
clients.
Am I too old (or
young) to learn?
No, you are never too old and as long as you are 14 or over,
you wont be too young. PPSS is suitable for everyone. It is
tailored to meet your needs and your capabilities. Yes you will
be taught how to improve your fitness but EVERYONE can do
something better, its just a question of being shown how
to.
Can you guarantee VIP
privacy? For our VIP clients, we are happy to sign
a non-disclosure agreement and will do everything in our power
to ensure that your training remains confidential.
In some circumstances it is best if training
is done at your home or workplace.
How often should I train?
We recommend twice a week (two one-hour session) for most
clients. However we have (or have had) clients who train less
often, more often or in blocks (e.g. a day a month). It depends
on your lifestyle and what is possible for you.
I want to train but work unsocial
hours, what can I do? Private sessions are the
answer. Subject to availability, they can be booked between
7:30am and 10:30pm Mon - Fri and 7:30am and 11:30am Sat -
Sun.
In one unusual case, we have even delivered
training in the early morning between 2am and 4am (We did
charge an additional fee - however it met the clients
requirements).
I don't want to learn a Martial
Art.
The Protectics Personal Safety System is tailored to the
individual, if you want a martial art with gradings and belts
(leading up to Black Belt) then we can oblige. However if you
do not want any of that, we can offer you the same effective
training but simply without the rigmarole and tests that some
people find uninteresting.
I do want to learn a Martial
Art. The Protectics Personal Safety System is
tailored to the individual, if you want a martial art with
gradings and belts (leading up to Black Belt) then we can
oblige. For clients that are interested we can also include the
study of traditional Chinese and Japanese weapons and other
more formal elements of study that will add an extra dimension
to the already effective Personal Safety training.
I am worried that I cannot protect
myself and so, the best thing to do is to ignore the issue of
personal defense.
You know you are in for a surprise - anyone, and yes we do mean
ANYONE can learn how to be their own 'bodyguard'. You can learn
the observational awareness skills; the understanding of
conflict dynamics; the ability to defuse a tense situation; the
physical skills to protect yourself and your loved ones. All of
those and much more are part of the training you will receive
when you start learning the Protectics Personal Safety
System.
I am worried because I am too old; a
weak person; 'just a woman'; lack killer
instinct. All of those corny old lines that people
had been fed (or feed themselves) that disempower them and make
them believe that you have to be 'big and tough' to survive...
It's simply not true, well the 'big' bit isn't. Yes you do have
to be tough but that's not physically tough (it helps but isn't
a necessity). You have to be mentally and emotionally tough and
that is a skill that can be learnt and is taught as part of the
Protectics Personal Safety System.
I live in a nice neighbourhood and
nothing bad will ever happen. Sorry, but if in
order to be safe all we had to do was live somewhere
particular, we all would. Arguments, road rage, burglaries and
street crime can and do happen anywhere. You need the mental
preparedness and physical defensive skills of the Protectics
Personal Safety System.
I am worried that it will be too
tough, like a nightmare version of an army boot camp where I
will be bullied and humiliated. Nope, nothing like
that, fun and jokes and laughs and enjoyable training. WHY????
Because the brain learns best when it's enjoying itself. Tough
training may look impressive but when the brain is in survival
mode, no learning is happening. To learn how to protect
yourself it MUST be enjoyable if it is going to work.
I have heard that trying to defend
yourself just means you will annoy your attacker and they will
hurt you even more. Not true, unless you try to do
something that is ineffective. One of the main things that rape
prevention studies have shown over the years, is that a
spirited emotional, verbal (and if necessary effective
physical) defence is the best way to minimise the injuries
caused by an attacker.
I am worried that it will be too
expensive? Training does cost money but that is
nothing compared to the cost of living your life 'Oh so
carefully', so as to make sure that you don't upset anyone.
Maybe you even don't go to strange places because you worry
that there might be trouble. Liiving your life wrapped
up in emotional cotton wool does cost you. More
importantly, what about the cost if something should happen and
you or someone you care for is attacked and hurt - what price
would you place on that?
I already have training in a martial
art and surely that has given me the skills to protect
myself? Well, the beginnings of PPSS came about in
1989 when its founder Robert Agar-Hutton realised that despite
training in the martial arts for nearly twenty years (he had
started training in 1970) he was not convinced that he knew
what to do in a 'real' situation. In particular, how do you
solve a conflict situation without fighting; how do you deal
with the fear that is caused when someone threatens you; how do
you know what is the correct thing to do from a moral and legal
viewpoint. Back in 1989 Robert went to several experienced
martial artists (including instructors) and found... That they
didn't know either! That was the initial revelation that
started the research that has become the Protectics Personal
Safety System. Furthermore several of the people that trained
in the system have been martial arts black belts and they have
found it to be of great value to them. So will you!
